According to a report I heard on the radio recently, apples actually help improve lung function. I knew the old saying about an apple a day keeping the doctor away, but didn’t know anything about what it really meant. What they were saying on the radio was that by eating 5 apples per week, you can actually increase your lung function by 400%. I don’t remember all of the other things they said about it, but that one thing in particular stuck out and I retained it.

One of the main concerns about H1N1 is complications, which they say happen mainly in people with compromised immune systems, who have respiratory issues such as asthma and those who have respiratory illness on a frequent basis. If you can literally increase your lung function dramatically by eating 5 apples per week, then it seems that maybe we should be prescribing an apple a day to those in high risk categories. We should focus more on preventative than reactionary medicine and any natural support that we can give our body is good. Dr. Shaklee always said, “feed a body what it needs and it will heal itself.”

In addition, to making sure we get enough apples in our diet, my family is also taking Nutriferon, a natural immune building supplement, by Shaklee. We have really seen a difference when we incorporate it into our daily regimen of supplements. For more information on Nutriferon, feel free to go to www.healthylegacy.myshaklee.com or to www.tarahayes.com, which will redirect you to the site.

We will be posting a few recipe’s for our friends who are participating in the “Daniel Fast” and others out there who would like to fast with us or just have a few great vegetarian recipes. This is the first of those posts….

2 packages Vegetarian/Soy ground meat substitute
1 large onion
1 clove garlic (optional)
1T Olive Oil
Salt (to taste)
Pepper (to taste)
1 can tomato paste
1 can Rotel
1 can fresh tomatoes
1 can northern beans (drained)
1 can red kidney beans (drained)
1 can black beans (drained)
1 can pinto beans
1 can corn (optional)
2 cups dark roast coffee (pre-made)
chili spices (2 Alarm Chili, Brown Bag Chili or your favorite chili mix)

Coffee: It is important to use strong coffee made the same day as the chili. You can make it fresh and then put the 2 cups in there or you can use coffee made earlier the same day. Note, this is not coffee grounds or beans, but coffee that you would drink from a cup.

Mix together cans of tomato, tomato paste, Rotel and beans in a large pot. Add the chili mix, salt and pepper (to taste) and the cups of coffee and stir. Add additional water if needed. Dice the onion and the garlic (optional) and saute it with olive oil. Then, add the onion to the mix and brown the meat substitute. Add it to the mixture and simmer for a couple of hours.

Brian says to make sure the room is clear when you try it because it is “slap your mamma good”.

“Feed your body what it needs and it will naturally heal itself.” Dr. Forrest Shaklee
